J Carew Alvarez
Carew Alvarez represents governmental entities, businesses, and individuals in South Carolina state and federal courts. His practice focuses on the defense of civil litigation matters, including governmental liability, constitutional claims brought under 42 U.S.C. § 1983, and traditional insurance defense cases. Carew regularly handles matters involving personal injury, premises liability, and automobile negligence, and has experience defending state agencies and employees in complex federal litigation.
Carew has represented clients from initial case evaluation and pre-suit investigation through discovery, dispositive motion practice, and resolution. He has drafted and argued motions in both state and federal court, including dispositive motions in federal civil rights cases, and has obtained favorable outcomes for his clients at the summary judgment stage. His practice emphasizes early case assessment, strategic motion practice, and efficient resolution of claims.
Carew earned his B.A. in Finance from Wofford College, where he was a member of the football team and was named to the Dean’s List and Southern Conference Academic Honor Roll. He graduated cum laude from the University of South Carolina School of Law, where he was named to the Dean’s List and received the CALI Award for Excellence in Topics in Insurance Law. While in law school, Carew served as an Articles Editor for the ABA Real Property, Trust and Estate Law Journal and received the Golden Spade Award for his work as an editor. Outside of his practice, Carew enjoys hunting, fishing, and college football.
