J Matthew Johnson
Matt Johnson represents governmental entities, businesses, and individuals in South Carolina state and federal courts at both the trial and appellate levels. Matt’s practice focuses on the representation of state agencies, counties, municipalities, and governmental employees in tort actions, federal civil rights litigation, and declaratory judgment matters. Matt also represents businesses in employment matters, business disputes, and professional negligence claims. Additionally, Matt has extensive experience defending businesses in construction defect, premises liability, personal injury, landlord/tenant disputes, and products liability matters. Matt has represented clients in all stages of matters, from pre-suit investigation through appeal. He frequently appears in South Carolina state and federal courts and has represented clients in successful appeals in both the appellate courts of South Carolina and the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. Before beginning his practice in South Carolina, Matt served as the law clerk for the Honorable Joseph A. Portelli, JSC, of the New Jersey Superior Court.
Outside of his practice, Matt is involved in the legal profession and his community. A 2015 graduate of the South Carolina Bar Leadership Academy, he has chaired the Bar’s Torts and Insurance Practices Section and serves as a Member of the Bar's House of Delegates. Matt is a member and Past President of the Rotary Club of Charleston-Breakfast, a leader in Scouting America as Cubmaster of his local Cub Scout pack, and serves as a mentor for cadets interested in pursuing a legal career through The Citadel's Cadet Corps Leaders Mentors Program.
